This Privacy Policy for Binge Base (“we,” “us,” or “our”) describes how and why we might collect, store, use, and/or share (“process”) your personal information when you use our services (the “Services”), including when you visit binge-base.com.
Reading this policy will help you understand your privacy rights and choices. If you don’t agree with our practices, please don’t use the Services. Questions? Email larry@binge-base.com.
TL;DR
- What we collect: Standard analytics data (so we can tell which Binge Maps are useful) and any information you give us if you email. We don’t ask for names, addresses, payment info, or anything sensitive.
- What we use it for: Improving the site, fixing problems, responding to your messages, and — when AdSense activates — showing ads.
- Who we share it with: Third-party services that run the site (Google Analytics, Cloudflare, ChemiCloud) and — when active — Google AdSense and Amazon Associates. Each one has its own privacy policy.
- What we don’t do: Sell your personal information. Process sensitive data (race, ethnicity, health, sexual orientation, religious belief). Collect data from anyone under 18.
- What you can do: Depending on where you live, you have rights to access, correct, delete, or limit how we use your data. Email larry@binge-base.com to exercise them. We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signals automatically.
1. What information do we collect?
Personal information you provide to us
We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide when you contact us — for example, by emailing larry@binge-base.com. This may include:
- Names
- Email addresses
- Any other information you choose to include in your message
Sensitive information. We do not process sensitive information (such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, health data, or biometric data).
Information automatically collected
Some information is collected automatically when you visit Binge Base. This information does not reveal your specific identity but may include device and usage information:
- Log and usage data. Service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers and third-party services collect when you access the Services. This may include your IP address, device information, browser type and settings, page interactions, referring URLs, and timestamps.
- Device data. Information about the computer, phone, tablet, or other device you use, such as device and application identification numbers, IP address, browser type, hardware model, operating system, and similar configuration data.
- Location data. Approximate location based on your IP address (typically city or region level — not precise GPS coordinates).
This information is needed to maintain the security and operation of the Services, to diagnose technical issues, and for internal analytics and reporting purposes.
We also collect information through cookies and similar technologies — see Section 5.
2. How do we process your information?
In short: We process your information to operate, improve, and secure the Services, communicate with you, and comply with the law. We process information only when we have a valid legal reason to do so.
Specifically:
- To respond to your communications. When you email us, we use your message and address to reply.
- To analyze how the Services are used so we can improve them — which Binge Maps are read most, which ones drive engagement, where readers come from.
- To diagnose technical problems and protect the Services against errors, fraud, and abuse.
- To deliver advertising (when Google AdSense activates) — including personalized advertising based on your prior visits to this and other sites, where permitted.
- To process affiliate referrals when you click an affiliate link.
- To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.
We process your information only with valid legal reasons (see Section 3).
3. What legal bases do we rely on to process your information?
If you are located in the EU or UK
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to identify the legal basis for processing your personal information. We rely on the following:
- Consent. We may process your information if you have given us permission to use your personal information for a specific purpose. You can withdraw consent at any time — see Section 9.
- Legitimate interests. We may process your information when it is reasonably necessary to achieve our legitimate business interests (such as analyzing how the Services are used to improve them) and those interests don’t outweigh your interests, rights, and freedoms.
- Legal obligations. We may process your information where it is necessary for compliance with our legal obligations, such as cooperating with law enforcement, exercising or defending our legal rights, or responding to legal process.
- Vital interests. We may process your information where it is necessary to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of another individual.
If you are located in Canada
We may process your information if you have given us specific permission (express consent), or in situations where your permission can be inferred (implied consent). You can withdraw consent at any time. We may also process your information without consent in limited cases permitted by Canadian law — for example, to investigate suspected wrongdoing, to comply with a subpoena, or in vital-interest situations.
4. When and with whom do we share your information?
We may share information with the following third-party services that operate the site:
- Google Analytics 4 — analytics (active)
- Google AdSense — display advertising (planned, not currently active)
- Cloudflare — content delivery network and security
- ChemiCloud — web hosting
- Amazon Associates Program — affiliate network (active)
Each service has its own privacy policy governing how it processes information collected through Binge Base.
We may also share or transfer information in connection with a merger, sale of assets, financing, or acquisition of all or part of our business.
We do not sell your personal information. We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signals to opt you out of personalized advertising — see Section 10.
5. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?
Yes. We use cookies and similar tracking technologies (like web beacons and pixels) to collect and store information when you interact with the Services. Some maintain the security of the Services or assist with basic site functions. Others are used by third parties for analytics and advertising.
Cookies in use:
- Analytics cookies (active): Google Analytics 4 uses cookies to measure site usage. These are set by Google and governed by Google’s Privacy Policy. To opt out of Google Analytics across all sites, visit https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. You can also opt out of Google Analytics Advertising Features through Google Ads Settings.
- Advertising cookies (planned): When Google AdSense activates, advertising cookies will be used to serve ads. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings or via aboutads.info.
- Affiliate tracking cookies (active): When you click an Amazon Associates affiliate link, the affiliate network may set a cookie on your device to track the referral. These cookies are set by the affiliate network, not by Binge Base.
You can disable cookies in your browser settings. Disabling them may affect some site functionality but won’t prevent you from reading content.
When advertising cookies become active, this page will be updated.
6. How long do we keep your information?
We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.
- Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics 4’s default retention setting (currently 14 months for event-level data).
- Email correspondence is retained as long as reasonably necessary to respond to your message and for record-keeping thereafter.
When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize it. If deletion is not possible (for example, because the information has been stored in backup archives), we will securely store it and isolate it from further processing until deletion is possible.
7. How do we keep your information safe?
We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. The site uses HTTPS encryption for all pages.
However, no method of transmission over the internet or information storage technology is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information. Transmission of personal information to and from the Services is at your own risk.
8. Do we collect information from minors?
We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age, nor do we knowingly sell such personal information. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such use of the Services. If we learn that personal information from users under 18 has been collected, we will take reasonable measures to promptly delete it. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from a minor, please email larry@binge-base.com.
9. What are your privacy rights?
Depending on where you live, you may have specific rights regarding your personal information.
EEA, UK, Switzerland, and Canada. Under applicable data protection laws, you may have rights to:
- Request access and obtain a copy of your personal information
- Request rectification or erasure
- Restrict the processing of your personal information
- Data portability (where applicable)
- Object to the processing of your personal information
- Not be subject to solely automated decision-making
You also have the right to withdraw your consent at any time (where consent was the legal basis for processing).
If you are located in the EEA or UK and believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you may file a complaint with your Member State data protection authority or the UK Information Commissioner’s Office. If you are located in Switzerland, you may contact the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner.
United States residents. See Section 11 for state-specific rights.
To exercise any of these rights, email larry@binge-base.com with a description of your request and the jurisdiction whose law you’re relying on. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.
10. Controls for Do-Not-Track features and Global Privacy Control
Do-Not-Track (DNT). Most browsers include a Do-Not-Track feature you can activate to signal your privacy preference. There is currently no industry standard for honoring DNT signals, and we do not respond to them at this time. If a standard is adopted, we will update this policy.
Global Privacy Control (GPC). We recognize and honor Global Privacy Control signals. If you use a browser or extension that supports GPC, we will treat this as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising purposes under applicable state privacy laws (including the California Consumer Privacy Act). When we detect a GPC signal from your browser, we apply your opt-out preference automatically without requiring any additional action. For more information about GPC and how to enable it, visit globalprivacycontrol.org.
